The city
Half an hour is the difference between an adventure and a life
Almost everything a quiet coast cannot give you is in Mérida, and Mérida is half an hour away. So here you do not choose between the sea and civilisation. That is the whole argument, and it is the one that makes people stay.

What it is
Capital of Yucatán since 1542
Mérida is the state capital and the largest city on the peninsula. It was founded in 1542 on the Maya city of T'Hó, and the old centre is still the real centre of the city, with people living and working in it. It is not a museum quarter that empties out at six.
Paseo de Montejo is the avenue of the big houses from the henequen era, and around it are whole neighbourhoods of colonial houses restored over the last twenty years. You eat outside in January. There are free concerts in the squares at weekends. It is a city you walk at night.
What is there · What the city solves
Private hospitals
Mérida holds the specialist medical care for the whole peninsula, with English speaking staff. It is the reason this coast works for somebody over sixty.
International airport
Manuel Crescencio Rejón airport, about forty five minutes from Progreso. Your children can come for a long weekend.
Education
Public and private universities, and bilingual schools, for anyone moving with a family rather than retiring.
Everything else
Shopping centres, cinemas, large stores and specialist trades. No ordering online and waiting three weeks.
Flights
Getting here from the north
Are there direct flights from the United States?
Yes. Houston is the shortest hop north, a little over two hours in the air. That turns this coast into somewhere you fly to on a Friday, rather than a trip you plan a year around.
Check times and seasons with the airline before you plan. Routes change every year.
And from Canada?
Direct service has been announced from Toronto and from Calgary. For Western Canada it is the first time such a route has existed at all. These are new and seasonal routes, so confirm the exact start date and the operating days with the airline.
Can you come in through Cancún?
You can fly to Cancún and drive. It is about four hours to Mérida on the toll highway. That is a road connection, not an air one, and it is worth knowing before you book.
